08 Hunter Valley Semillon
2008 Hunter Valley Semillon
This wine is pale straw in colour, with lemon zest and honeysuckle aromas. The palate is long and tight with abundant citrus flavours and delicate acidity, the hallmarks of classic Hunter Semillon.
The 2008 vintage was the wettest and coolest of my 15 year career in the Hunter Valley. However, as is often the case, the wet years are responsible for the classic Semillons that seem to live forever. We were very lucky with this parcel of grapes, as we were able to pick them fully ripe just after the Australia Day weekend, before the rain really set in.
This wine was made from grapes grown directly behind Blaxlands Inn, which were planted in the early 1980’s by Christopher Barnes AM. The soil in this vineyard is a mixture of red and black volcanic clay, which is very important in the cool wet years, as heavy soils contribute more weight to the wine.
This wine is drinking very well now and is a perfect accompaniment to fish and other seafood. In time it will blossom into a classic Hunter Valley Semillon!
